School Policy

Read below for a full description of the rules of Sebastiani Fencing Academy. These safety rules should be reviewed and understood by fencers and their guardians. Any student who does not follow the rules may be excused from class immediately and no refund will be provided. These rules are purely designed to foremost protect and develop a safe learning environment.

  • The fencing floor is a restricted area. Under normal circumstances, only fencers wearing the appropriate gear, designated by Sebastiani's instructors, are permitted on the fencing floor. Upon arrival, fencers must stay in the parents' observation lounge until they are explicitly instructed to enter the fencing area.

  • Students under the age of 13 must be fully suited up in their whites (non-electric fencing gear) five minutes prior to the beginning of their class. Novice and beginner fencers of all ages are not permitted to fence unsupervised by an instructor.

  • When not fencing, swords must be carried point down or in a fencing bag, and students may not carry swords unless wearing a fencing mask.

  • Running outside of designated exercises is not permitted.

  • Required gear for fencing: fencing mask, glove, jacket, under-arm protector, fencing pants, indoor fencing shoes (either fencing-specific shoes or another flat-soled sneaker/tennis shoe without black soles). Jeans, shorts, and casual pants are not permitted. Shoes worn outside are not permitted.

  • Any movement with the sword is not permitted if any person within six-feet of the action is unmasked, except during private lessons under the explicit direction of an SFA instructor.

  • Unmasking on an active fencing floor, especially in groups, is strictly prohibited. An active fencing floor is whenever another fencer(s) is making any type of movement with their sword(s).

  • Approaching or standing too close to fencers practicing, especially when swords' points are raised and/or in motion, is strictly prohibited.

  • Fencers in group sessions must always conduct bouts and drills in the same direction and with safe distance from one another.

  • Open fencing occurring concurrently but separate from group classes or private lessons must be confined to specific areas, designated by the SFA instructor(s) supervising at that time.

  • Unsportsmanlike behavior in any form, including but not limited to horseplay, improper conduct, rough actions, and unnecessarily forceful movements, intentional or not, are strictly prohibited and will result in expulsion. Each fencer, parent, and instructor has a duty to report any unsafe conditions or activity to staff.

  • Alcohol and recreational drugs are strictly prohibited.

  • Illness, injury, and the possession/consumption of prescribed medication must be reported to the appropriate instructor prior to the beginning of a class session.

  • Fencers are prohibited from participation if they have taken medication or undergone a procedure that limits physical activity within a certain time frame for sessions that fall within that time frame. Fencers are also prohibited from participation if they have taken alcohol and/or (non)prescription drugs within six hours of a class session.
